At Beaulieu International Group, we take pride in our contribution to the five-year Circular Flooring project, a European initiative led by ERFMI and the German Fraunhofer Institute to optimize the recycling of PVC.
“Post-consumer PVC often consists of materials that have been in use for 15 to 20 years, such as window frames, PVC pipes or PVC floorings. This old PVC frequently contains legacy additives that were common at the time but are now banned”, explains Lara Misseeuw, Innovation Project Manager at B.I.G. “Thanks to Fraunhofer Institute's advanced dissolution technology, these outdated plasticizers can be effectively removed from post-consumer PVC, resulting in a purified PVC stream that can be reused in modern applications.”
Tests conducted by our colleagues at Unilin have shown that this recycled PVC stream can indeed be utilized in new products that meet current standards. “Beyond the positive test results, this also demonstrates that industrial collaboration is crucial for furthering the sustainability of our products and our industry as a whole!” Lara concludes.
